Commemorating the site of the Civil War Battle of New Market, the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park preserves the memories of one of the war's most unique battles. Taking place on May 15, 1864, the Confederate army won against the Union troops thanks to the aid of thousands of college-aged cadets from the Virginia Military Institute. Today, visitors can walk around the battlefield itself, tour the Bushong Farm, which was used during the battle as a field hospital and whose grounds saw some of the heaviest conflict. There is also the Hall of Valor Civil War Museum that tells in greater detail the story of the Civil War, and especially the conflicts that took place in Virginia. The site is isolated from large populations, sitting a few miles north of the town of New Market.
Open daily 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Adults $10; Seniors (65+) $9; Children (6-12) $6; Children 5 and under are free.
